Electrical Wiring

Agricultural Wiring Handbook (14th edition)

The premier reference on farm wiring for over 40 years, the Agricultural Wiring Handbook is now in its 14th edition. Over 26 different types of farm buildings are discussed in the book. Simple wiring plans are provided for dairy barns, swine facilities, grain bins, farm shops, poultry barns and other farm structures. Recommendations are also provided for the farm home, ground-fault and arc-fault interrupters, phase converters, standby generators, and lighting requirements.

Of particular interest to electric power suppliers are chapters on metering, on-farm distribution arrangements, and sizing procedures for farm services. This latest edition contains an explanation of 4-wire services, and their use in reducing stray voltage. Other sections cover motor circuits, grounding, and Code-mandated equipotential planes for livestock buildings.

The Handbook contains 34 chapters, that are grouped into the following topic areas:

    I.     FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS AND REQUIREMENTS
II.   WIRING CONSIDERATIONS FOR FARM BUILDINGS
    III.  METERING, DISTRIBUTION AND SERVICES
    IV.  CONSIDERATIONS FOR MOTOR CIRCUITS
    V.   GROUNDING
    VI.  SELECTED NEC ARTICLE REPRINTS
    VII. REFERENCE TABLES

One of the most valuable parts of the Handbook are the wire sizing tables. You can use these tables to correctly size circuit conductors, service drops and feeders. The tables allow accurate sizing for both copper and aluminum, using just the amp size of the load and the length of the circuit run.

To avoid costly Code violations, order the latest edition of this 120-page reference. The consequences of improper wiring can include: (1) increased risk of fire, (2) higher insurance costs, and (3) lost time in rewiring the building.

Electrical Wiring for Livestock and Poultry Structures (videotape)

Using on-farm scenes of wiring situations, this 16-minute video illustrates wiring dangers that arise when improper methods or materials are used in confinement structures. Learn what creates hazardous wiring in livestock and poultry structures, and how to choose the correct service entrance panel, cable, light fixtures, and outlet boxes. See how to avoid hazardous situations and premature replacement of equipment with proper installation. Developed by NFEC with input from educators, electric power suppliers, and other professionals, this videotape would be an excellent addition to your customer-education program. It is a valuable resource for contractors, electricians, youth groups, and insurance professionals.

Planning Electrical Needs for Crop Drying and Storage

This handy guide addresses electrical system planning and safety-related issues for grain bins. The 8-page consumer-oriented bulletin describes requirements for power line clearances near grain bins and explains how far bins need to be from lines so that special construction can be avoided. Easy-to-understand diagrams and photographs help farmers, grain bin installers, and electrical contractors comply with the National Electrical Safety Code line clearance requirements.

Practical Irrigation Wiring
The electrical wiring required for irrigation systems is unique.  Specific wiring materials and procedures must be followed, as mandated by the 2002 National Electrical CodePractical Irrigation Wiring explains all aspects of a safe installation, so you can avoid costly Code violations and possible liability claims.  The 99-page book explains each concept in laymen's terms, and contains multiple drawings and photos to make it a handy on-the-job reference.  Although focused mainly on farm irrigation, much of the material applies also to golf course and sports turf irrigation, commercial landscape irrigation, and pumps serving livestock lagoons, wastewater systems and drainage projects.  Examples are used throughout the book, and test questions with answers in six different chapters add clarification.  The chapter titles (below) explain the broad range of subjects covered.
Chapter 1 - Irrigation and Electricity's Role
Chapter 2 - General Considerations (NEC Article 110 Issues)
Chapter 3 - Services and Service Entrance Equipment
Chapter 4 - How To Size Wires
Chapter 5 - Electric Service Configurations
