Equipotential Planes For Stray Voltage Reduction

A 14-page book that shows techniques for installing an equipotential plane in livestock buildings to reduce the effect of stray voltage. Several drawings supplement the text. Developed by the Midwest Rural Energy Council, this resource applies both to retrofitting existing dairy barns, as well as new construction.

Non-members - $4.50

Understanding Neutral-to-Earth and Stray Voltage

Written in easy-to-understand terminology with numerous helpful illustrations, this 21-page booklet answers virtually every question customers might have about stray voltage. The booklet begins by defining neutral-to-earth voltage (NEV) and describes its potential causes and effects. It then provides methods for identifying NEV, ways to correct it, and procedures to prevent NEV. It was produced by Consumers Power Company and the Agricultural Engineering Department at Michigan State University, and is distributed solely by NFEC.

Understanding Neutral-To-Earth Voltage (videotape)

After watching this 10-minute videotape, almost anyone will have a better understanding of the phenomenon of neutral-to-earth or stray voltage. Using on-farm scenes and comments from experts, farmers, and electricians, the video explains what stray voltage is and how it can occur. Illustrations detail possible sources and show why dairy cows are particularly susceptible. Produced by the Detroit Edison Company and the Cooperative Extension Service at Michigan State University, the video is available only through NFEC.

NFEC Members/Educators - $175.00
Non-member Organizations - $220.00

Fundamentals of Stray Voltage (videotape)

This training video comes in two parts. First, viewers see a 5-minute segment explaining the basics of stray voltage. This is helpful for educating a general audience.  The second part contains a more detailed discussion and visual demonstration.  In this segment, Dr. Truman Surbrook provides a live demonstration to create neutral-to-earth voltage using unbalanced loads, poor connections, and off-farm sources. This segment is 44 minutes in length.

Members/Educators - $115.00 each
Non-members - $180.00 each
